Perpetuum Ritmico

Perpetuum Ritmico, Latvia’s first percussion ensemble, has been actively performing since 2014. The ensemble consists of Guntars Freibergs, Mikus Bāliņš, Elvijs Endelis and Ernests Mediņš – all accomplished percussionists who have studied in Latvia as well as abroad.

“Our ensemble can be characterised by enthusiasm, charisma, professionalism and a flight of ideas,” say the members about themselves. “We bring a wide variety of styles to our performances and also a very broad palette of percussion instruments. Our repertoire ranges from folklore to the avantgarde, trekking through contemporary popular culture with a heritage of classical music.”

Perpetuum Ritmico’s “Vasks and Fire” 2016 concert at the Baltais Flīģelis concert hall in Sigulda was nominated for the Latvian Grand Music Award for best concert of the year. Likewise, the ensemble’s music for the production of Salātlapiņa (Little Lettuce Leaf, or Rapunzel) at the Latvian Puppet Theatre was nominated for a 2018/2019 “Spēlmaņu nakts” Latvian Theatre Award in the category of best musical score.

The Perpetuum Ritmico repertoire includes music by Pēteris Vasks, Madara Pētersone and ensemble member Guntars Freibergs as well as Steve Reich, John Cage, Keiko Abe, Tobias Broström, Elliot Cole and many other composers. The ensemble also creates its own programmes of original music. Perpetuum Ritmico has collaborated with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra and the Sinfonietta Rīga chamber orchestra and has performed in many places throughout Latvia and in Lithuania.
