Jānis Porietis

Currently Jānis Porietis is the trumpet professor in Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Music Academy, principal trumpet of chamber orchestra Sinfonietta Rīga, assistant principal in the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra as well as a member of the National Guard Big Band.

Dr. Porietis received his masters’ and bachelor degree in Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Music Academy. During this time he studied in Netherlands with with Reijer Dorrestein and in Finland with Pasi Pirinen.

In 2013 he received his DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) from the University of Kansas where during that time he was also the GTA (Graduate Teaching Assistant) of Professor Stephen Leisring. In this period of studies he has participated in many workshops and masterclasses led by Philip Smith, Joseph Alesi, Michael Sachs, Vincent Penzarella, Ray Riccomini, Mark Inouye, Jon Lewis and other great brass players. Also, during this period Dr. Porietis took part in three Naxos label CD recordings being the principal and solo trumpet with the University of Kansas Wind Ensemble with whom he also appeared in a concert in Carnegie Hall, New York which was very well received by the critics of The New York Times.

Dr. Porietis has been a part of numerous chamber groups playing in very different music genres which helps him explore music in various ways. He can also be heard in his piano/trumpet or organ/trumpet recitals.
