Matīss Čudars is one of the most versatile Latvian guitarists. He studied at the Riga Cathedral Choir School and the Conservatory of Amsterdam. In recent years, he has turned more and more frequently to creating new works, composing academic music for the Latvian Radio Choir, the Sinfonietta Rīga chamber orchestra, and the Latvian Radio Big Band. He has also co-written songs for the rock group Spāre, the Auziņš.Čudars.Arutyunyan jazz trio, the Belgian-Latvian experimental pop ensemble How Town, and other musicians. He has won many international competitions and was nominated for musician of the year at the Latvian Grand Music Awards in 2018. In 2019, he received the “Zelta Mikrofons” Annual Latvian Music Recording Industry Award for the Baltic album by Auziņš.Čudars.Arutyunyan. Čudars takes solo guitar very seriously, playing his own and others’ compositions as well as transcribing existing works for guitar. Improvisation is important to Čudars’ performances, which feature free improvisation and also improvisation based on his and other composers’ work. He characterises his own music as an eclectic mosaic shaped by his colourful experience of various genres and aesthetics, from math-metal to Gregorian chant.
