“Music can be heard in the squeaking of a door, stirred in a cup of tea, a zipper, the jingling of keys... It can be heard in a crowd of people or in an empty space. It all depends on how one listens and how one understands. The more open one’s mind is, the richer the world of sound. The richer the world of sound, the more there is to say.”
Sabīne Ķezbere
Sabīne Ķezbere was born on January 31, 1985 in Riga. In 2005, she began her studies of composition at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music with Selga Mence, receiving her Bachelor’s degree in 2009, and, in 2011, her Master’s degree. She has participated at the international young Latvian musicians’ camp in Ogre (2004, 2006), the Donaueschinger Musiktage master classes The Next Generation in Germany (2007, 2008), the international young composer master classes in Mazsalaca (2008), composition master classes with James Wood (the Oslo Contemporary Music Festival, Norway, 2009) and Per Nørgård (Vinterlydfestival Norway, 2010).
She has achieved notable success at many composition competitions, including second place (first place was not awarded) and the Latvian Composers’ Union Award at the first young composer’s competition, organised by Latvian Radio, for her choir work Timor et tremor (2007). Her music has been performed at the new music festival Jaunās mūzikas dienas (2008, 2009, 2010), at the concert cycle Rudens mūzika (2009), the International Choral Competition Maribor (Slovenia, 2009), the VIII Pärnu International Choir Festival (Estonia, 2010). Monologue (2011, Copenhagen, Denmark) and Aquarelle (2012, Reykjavik, Iceland) were selected for the Nordic new music festival Ung Nordisk Musikk. In 2013, the composition Monologue was performed at the ISCM World New Music Days festival in Bratislava.
The composer has collaborated with the Latvian Radio Choir, conductors Kaspars Putniņš, Ainārs Rubiķis, and many other Latvian musicians. As of 2011, she is a member of the Latvian Composers’ Union. In 2011, she received the Tālivaldis Ķeniņš award. WRITING Spektromorfoloģijas nozīme skaņdarba tapšanā [Master’s Degree thesis]. – Rīga: 2011
