Banga - "Kolmi"

Ilgums: 00:04:06

Banga is a youth group whose activities go far beyond musical expression. This enterprising group of young people serves as an important link in the dialogue between traditional culture and the people of their own generation; they care about the relevance of that culture in the present day and also have the energy and knowledge to systematically promote it. This includes the group’s costumes based on archaeological evidence as well as their mask-making skills, celebration of seasonal festivals together and the playing of a wide range of instruments (kokle, wooden flutes, bagpipe, ģīga, drums, Jew’s harp, mandolin). In 2022, Banga released its debut album, Talkā, which focuses on polyphonic outdoor songs and instrumental melodies associated with working in the fields and celebrating afterwards.

Members of Banga participated in the preparation of the book Cittautu danči (Dances of other nations) in the Danču krātuves kolekcija (Dance archive collection) series, which features descriptions and instructions for folk dances from Latvia as well as those of other nations to encourage their learning and performance. The brief accompanying information next to the choreographic description for “Kolmi” states that the dance comes from Ingria. Paula Ābele, a member of Banga, plays the bagpipe. The books in this series serve as a valuable resource for folk dance enthusiasts.
