The song and the lyrics written in memory of the composer Emils Darzins (1875–1910), who died in tragic circumstances, and first performed at his grave during the unveiling of his monument in Riga 1913.
 The lyrics are by Antons Austrins (1884–1934), a Latvian writer of poetry and prose. The kokle is a Latvian string instrument.
