"Daba un dvēsele" (Nature and the Soul)

The song was written, first performed and first published in 1921.
The poem by Jānis Rainis is taken from his most philosophical book of poetry The End and the Beginning (Gals un sākums, 1912). Rainis was the greatest Latvian poet and playwright of the early part of the 20th century. For his poem he uses the motto by Blaise Pascal (1623–1662): "Nature does not know how great it is, but we do." The song was published abroad in 15 Lettische Chöre, l (Vienna: Universal Edition, No. 11147, 1940), p.33.
