The song was written in 1919, first published 1921. The poem (first published 1917) by Leons Paegle is taken from his play Resurrection (Augšāmcelšanās), premiered in February 1919 at the inauguration of the so-called Workers Theatre of Soviet Latvia, to some extent the forerunner of the Latvian National Theatre.
