Muosys

The beginnings of Muosys can be traced back to 2016, although the group began actively performing only in the spring of 2020 with the programme “Zynu, zynu tāva sātu” at the Gors Embassy of Latgale concert hall.
The members of Muosys are three sisters (muosys meaning ‘sisters’ in Latgalian), all professional musicians who, alongside their academic musical education, have also actively inherited and studied Latvian folk music. Various field studies in Latgale and elsewhere have allowed them to explore their culture more deeply and develop unique arrangements and compositions. These have mostly been created by ethnomusicologist Liene Brence, who is the group’s violinist. Her musical vision is rooted in nature and her family’s strong traditions as well as in the intonations of Baroque and Scandinavian traditional music.
The music performed by Muosys is diverse and also appeals to professionals in the folk dance genre. An example is the group’s collaboration with choreographer Ilmārs Dreļs. In concert, the musicians express their creativity by playing several different instruments, resulting in interesting and engaging musical material.
The members of Muosys are:
Marta Igaune – voice, mandolin, guitar, percussion
Laima Maslova – voice, flute, recorder, percussion, melodica
Liene Brence – voice, violin, kokle, guitar, mandolin
