Rūdolfs Macats

I try to give light with my music!
Rūdolfs Macats is best known for his work as a jazz and improvisational pianist and composer. He graduated from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam as a jazz pianist. In his studies he focused on American jazz traditions and modern jazz. He has also finished the two-year “Nordic Master: The Composing Musician” programme offered by the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen, in which he focused on academic music and free improvisation. He combines very diverse musical styles and genres in his work.
In 2014 Macats released his debut album, Breeze, recorded together with the Italian bassist Marco Zenini and the Luxembourgian drummer Pit Dahm. In 2017, under the stage name Vēstnesis (‘messenger’ in Latvian), he released the album Volume I, which includes six songs in the Latvian language recorded by himself. In Macats’ own words, the project consists of dreamy synthesiser sounds, romantic harmonies and danceable rhythms in which a silky, velvety vocal timbre and poetic lyrics lead the listener into a meditative state. The album is available on popular streaming platforms, and Macats has planned to record a follow-up to it.
Macats began a collaboration with the Latvian Radio Big Band in 2017, taking part in the Latvian Jazz Suite Vol. 2 album. The album also includes three of his compositions: Saules bērni (Children of the Sun), Gudrības līnija (Line of Wisdom) and Veltījums jūras dievam (Dedication to the Sea God).
