The Flute dream | Emīls Dārziņš – 150

2. May, 2025

The musical-theatrical performance "The Flute Fream. Emīls Dārziņš – 150" is a tribute to the composer whose star continues to shine brightly in the Latvian musical landscape. A true son of his motherland, Dārziņš remained deeply devoted to his homeland and culture, leaving a lasting imprint on Latvia’s musical heritage. Though only a few of his compositions have survived, each one is a rare gem—beautiful, distinctive, and deeply expressive. Dārziņš’s mystical, mesmerizing, and emotionally rich musical language is truly one of a kind.

The concept for this documentary performance, draws an intriguing parallel between Dārziņš’s music and Hermann Hesse’s fairy tale The Flute Dream, offering a poetic reflection on the composer’s life and work.

This unique performance intertwines Hesse’s fairy tale, narrated by actor Mārtiņš Vilsons, with Dārziņš’s romantic solo songs, performed by pianist Rihards Plešanovs and soloists, and the composer’s choral works, presented both live by the Latvian Radio Choir and in historical recordings by the Reiter Choir.

Program: Hermann Hesse’s fairy tale, solo and choral music by Emīls Dārziņš.
