Tautumeitas - "Danco, Jāni"
Tautumeitas is a Latvian ethno-music band founded in 2015. The group consists of six talented women who, together with accompanying musicians, combine traditional Latvian folk songs with modern musical styles to create a unique and energetic sound. The singers are known for their powerful vocals and memorable visual image.
“Danco, Jāni” (Dance, Jānis) is a Midsummer song from the group’s 2024 repertoire, and this year at the summer solstice, Tautumeitas invited everyone to a concert programme titled “Ritual”. It conjured the atmosphere of an ancient Latvian festive tradition in which the forces of nature, the sun and fire are all important symbols. Tautumeitas collaborates with a large cast of backing musicians to create a rich and vibrant sound. The song “Danco, Jāni” is a lively and rhythmic piece that invites the audience to dance and celebrate Midsummer Night. It reflects local folk traditions and the strong connection Latvians feel with nature that is an essential part of summer solstice celebrations. With its energy and expressive harmonies, the song embodies both the ancient and the modern spirit that characterises the music of the Tautumeitas.
